Ricany victorious

Ricany overcame adverse weather conditions to claim their first CEE Rugby victory beating Hungarian cup-winners Vitézek 26-10. Ricany now await the winners of the Donau Wien-Baia Mare Quarter-Final next Saturday.

The terrible weather that included frozen pitch, heavy wind and snowfall could not stop the hosts from scoring 4 tries and march on to the Semi Finals. Luckily for them, the ever slippery floor was a big setback for the Esztergom pack that made themselves famous with beating Romanian professionals Arad in their last Pool game.

Instead of rucking and mauling, the game was decided by clinical breakdown execution by Ricany who scored from after set-piece situations repeatedly through gaps in the backs of of Vitézek.

Fly half Pavel Camrda stole the show with his man-of-the-match performance, scoring two similar tries in the first half, and perfect position kicking in the second half. His efforts were answered by Robert Deli who showed far the best display from the visitors. The powerful No. 8 first knocked out Ricany captain Josef Blaha in one of his brutal runs, then scored to tries of his own from close range.

After a 14-10 interval (which was short and taken on the pitch due to player health reasons), the battle run mad in the second period. Numerous offenses from both sides ended up in a beutiful thump by Zoltan Heckel in the face of Norbert Hemelik. However, this was not a boxing game, therefore the Hungarian prop was sinbinned immediately. The fight did not go on sticking to the rules though, giving Austrian referee Andreas Schwab a very hard job. Three other yellow cards showed the desperation, but it was Vitézek who came up short.

Ricany scored two more times, and since there was no answer, the Czech side claimed victory more easily than expected. An ugly game, though, with weather conditions completely unsuitable for rugby.

Now everyone can hope that next weekend will be much sunnier, as the Viennese try to stop Romanian giants to meet Ricany in the SF, and in the other conference, Dragon Brno hosts Timisoara while Arad waits Bulldogok.
